On this date in 1926 Miles Dewey Davis was born to a wealthy African American family in Alton, Illinois. His father was a dentist and his mother was a musican. Davis musical studies began at 13, when he started trumpet lessons encouraged by his father. Davis later suggested that his fathers instrument choice was made largely to irk his wife, who disliked the trumpets sound. In the fall of 1944, following graduation from high school, he moved to New York City to study at the Juilliard School of Music. He dropped out of the school, criticizing the focus on white European classical music. Davis later acknowledged the grounding in classics helped him become one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.
