On this day in 1943, a troop ship full of American Soldiers, the USAT Dorchester, was sank by a torpedo en route to Europe. Aboard were four Army chaplains, who gave their life vests – and their lives - to save civilian and military on the ship. The chaplains, Methodist minister George Fox, Rabbi Alexander Goode, Catholic priest John Washington, and the Reverend Clark Poling of the Reformed Church in America, helped Soldiers into life rafts and sacrificed their own life vests when the supply ran out. Survivors reported the “Four Immortal Chaplains” linked arms, said prayers and sang hymns as they went down with the ship. Fort Benning’s Field of the Four Chaplains, on Main Post beside The Infantry Center Chapel, is dedicated to those four great American heroes.
