On this day in 1991, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the National Organization for Women Legal Defense Fund (NOW) file a suit in federal district court to allow girls to attend the Detroit Public Schools’ highly-anticipated all-male African-centered academies set to open this fall. The groups argue that while focusing attention on the plight of African- American males is admirable, it denies girls the right to an equal education. Judge George Woods will ultimately side with the ACLU and NOW and against the 170,000-student school district.
