On this day, in the year 1967, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi crowned himself and his wife, Farah, Emperor and Empress of Iran Their reign brought major changes in Persia. The Shah(Emperor) expropriated large and medium-sized lands to benefit more than four million small farmers, and instigated the White Revolution which were a series of modernizing projects, which included, the modernizing of the political system, by extending suffrage to women (something the Shia Muslim faction frowned upon), the promotion of the participation of workers in factories through shares and other such measures, the improvement of the educational system by building new elementary schools and setting up literacy courses in remote villages with the help of the Imperial Iranian Armed Forces. The Shah also made many projects for the health of his people, and instituted exams for Islamic theologians to be full-pledged clerics. He also set up a free-of-charge nourishment program for children in the seventies. Their reign was highly regarded around the world as a great good for Iran. However, his constant modernizing attempts, which threatened the stability of Islam in the country, the businesses of the bazaari (traditional class of merchants), his and his familys claimed corruption and his recognition of Israel brought uprise in his country, which eventually led to the toppling of his regime.
