Once again, I’m signing off all social services for the month of August. If you’d like to reach me before September, please send an email to my @fortune address or better yet, call me. I embarked upon this experiment a year ago, and discovered how to spend five minutes doing nothing on a subway ride, how to get lost in my thoughts, and how better to listen to the thoughts of my friends and colleagues. I remembered--briefly--how to sit in a moment without moving on to the next. The silence was a gift. Again, my detox rules are somewhat arbitrary. I will not be available at any time on most social services. But, its harder to do this year because social networking has become more integral to my professional life. We now use an instant messaging platform internally at Fortune that replaces a significant amount of our email communication, and I depend more heavily on social services to distribute my writing. So Ill continue to distribute my writing on Twitter, and Ill use our internal instant messaging system. Oh, And Im not giving up texting this year; that was a quick fail last year.
