Once again, an Archaeologist has accused metal detectorists of digging artifacts without proof. BLM (Bureau Of Land Management) Burley Field Office Archaeologist Suzann Henrikson said this recently about the historic Oregon Trail near Burley Idaho. "The recent damage to the trail near Burley has resulted in a significant loss of history for the American public." However, what is troubling about Henrikson’s remark is this quote from the KTVB article that broke the story. “Officials have no specifics on what those items might be at this time.” Okay, so let’s get this straight. There is a significant loss of history, however, we don’t know what that history is, if any, because officials have no idea what those items were, that were removed, if any. So what we have here, is the typical Archaeologist, with nothing better to do, because they have nothing to do, jumping on a chance to bad mouth someone in the hobby even though there is no evidence to do so. I would suggest to Archaeologist Suzann Henrikson to refrain from making accusations that may come back to bite her in the backside. Just because she is a professional dirt digger, does not give her the right to condemn others on baseless assumptions. But, as we in the hobby know, many Archaeologists have that cry baby attitude relating to artifacts. By the way, here’s a thought. Maybe it was an Archaeologist who dug the so called artifacts. You know, there are looting, thieving Archaeologists out there, just waiting to get their hands on a rustic, or beautiful artifact for their own personal collection.
