One Minute Movie Review: Saw Godzilla tonight. Not sure they - TopicsExpress

One Minute Movie Review: Saw Godzilla tonight. Not sure they kept the scale of the monsters the same, but the CGI was great. Plot was predictable and the science was terrible, but a fun 3D flick. And just after finishing the painting on my background above, Im all about 3D. But this is a review of August: Osage County. The movie had some good elements and the acting was terrific, but the plot suffered from some deep flaws. First, the most interesting character is gone after the first five minutes of the movie. Second, the climatic scene occurs only a third of the way through the movie, leaving the writer the need to invent all sorts of other misfortunes for his characters to fill up the remaining time. The movie is almost entirely devoid of comic relief. Were also not given any good reasons to care about these people. I didnt find myself identifying or empathizing with the characters because they are rather flat. This felt like a script by someone who had seen too much Tennessee Williams and Eugene ONeill. But he forgot that tragedy does not lie in misfortune, but in tragic choices made by the main character. Here the characters are all deeply flawed individuals, but there is no mention of a time when any one of them made a choice that ruined everything that followed. This is the most elemental flaw in the movie. On a side note, after the disappearance of the patriarch, my favorite character is Charlie, or Big Charlie. I also found myself wondering about a movie written by a man that focuses almost entirely on women, some rather awful women. I havent come to any conclusions, but I wonder. Its not an awful movie, but if I were to recommend it it would be a tepid recommendation indeed. As good an actress as she was, I felt that the Oscar for best actress should never have gone to Cate Blanchett because Blue Jasmine was such an awful movie. I cant say the same about Meryl Streep. As weak as this movie was, she could have won that Oscar with honor. Sorry, this is probably a minute and a half review. Blame Godzilla.
