One last jaunt down the rabbit hole Because i go for the same walk - TopicsExpress

One last jaunt down the rabbit hole Because i go for the same walk three times a day But i never end up in the same place twice And it’s my last day in Marrakesh, and Morocco And my last day of Summer heat So it’s my last chance to get lost The Medina in Fez was bigger Yet after two days i got the hang of it But i haven’t got the hang of the vast souks here at all At all Every morning, afternoon, evening, i ask HOW DID I END UP HERE? It makes me think of a non-linear equation... A tiny change in input produces a huge range in outcome Because this morning i entered through here, but ended up there Which made no sense, because yesterday i entered through the same place, and went the same way, but ended up somewhere very different So this afternoon i thought i’d head for the leather cutting bit, which has been the most interesting of all, and for the ancient Madrassa Except i ended up in a run of expensive shops Which have never been there before Or anywhere before And this morning, trying to refind the Square, i thought i was heading northish, yet checked with the sun and found i was heading southish Which made no sense Though it’s still fun to be backtracking Because it never looks the same strolling this way back up, as that way down The meticulous minutiae The dextrous detail The abundant range The wealth of colour The overwhelming visual splendour The endless fascination The bustle, the surge and the throng The faces, the shawls, the burkhas the kaftans the t-shirts The limbs the eyes the mustaches the mouths The low voices the high voices the sibilance the huskiness The speeded rattle of the syllables The shouting The Shouting THE SHOUTING And then …when i’m starting to tire... And still, of course, navigationally challenged Blithely but wholly, navigationally challenged Suddenly it’s the Madrassah And the mosque And the leather And then the lovely short winding alleys of metal lampshades And a bit i actually know, which looks the same each time i’m here And then i’m back on the square, the Jemaa El Fnaa For orange juice and coffee and ice-cream And the best bread ever [apart from in Fez] To sit in the baking sun, when everyone else sits in the shade, because... My Autumn starts tomorrow... Yet before that... Its Once more down the rabbit hole ...
