One of our panelists on April 21 ,2014 for National PR Day at Kalamandir. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr Bharati Ray, historian and educationist, served as a Professor of History, Calcutta University and became the first woman Pro Vice Chancellor of the university. She was Founder- Director of Women’s Studies Research Centre at the University and worked as Vice President, Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Govt of India. Dr. Ray is a bilingual author and has fifteen books, both authored and edited, to her credit, Some of her important publications are Hyderabad and British Paramountcy (OUP); Early Feminists in Colonial Bengal: Sarala Devi Chaudhurani and Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain (OUP); Women of India: Colonial and Post- Colonial Periods (Sage), Different Types of History (Pearson Longman). She has compiled and edited two volumes of articles published in the earliest women’s journal in Bengal, Bamabodhini Patrika. Her latest publication, Ekaal Shekaal, a story of five generations, has received Bangla Academy Award, and has been translated into both Hindi and English by Penguin. She was invited at the prestigious Edinburgh Book Festival to read out excerpts from the manuscript of this book. She has chaired numerous national and international conferences and received many Fellowships, grants and invitations for Visiting Professorship from different international organisations, like Maison Des Sciences L’ Homme Paris, University of British Columbia, University of Roma Luiss. She gave addresses at prestigious conferences like the European Union, Wilton Park (UK), International Congress of Historical Sciences at Oslo, Trialogue on peace at Kabul and Rabindranath’s internationalism at San Paolo. She was a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), 1996-2002 and a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Empowerment of Women. She was chosen to represent She India at various international meets: at Berlin, Jakarta, Turkmenistan, Guyana, Mauritius, Budapest, Marrakech, Brazil and the UNO.
