Our cabin often stands empty for a few weeks at a time, which is when the mice get bold. Its not difficult to clear them out, but The Boy loathes them (with me its bats, with my husband its spiders, with our daughter its fiscal responsibility). Though most of the activity is on the upper level (kitchen, guest bathroom that smells like cinnamon because potpourri), this trip The Boy set a loaded trap beneath his bed. I tried to explain why that was a bad idea: First of all, most if not all of them have cleared out. Second, they dont care about the cold barren cement floor beneath your bed, they want the crumbs from my Pop Tarts, which are upstairs. Third, if one *did* trigger your trap at, say, 2:00 a.m., its creepy as hell. Then you get to lie there and wonder if its dead or just wiggling. Youll lie there wondering if you should try to go back to sleep or get up and dispose of the thing. Awful. So he thought about this for 2 days and then moved the trap. To the hallway just outside his room. Which is right next to the washing machine. Where I, lugging a basket full of laundry, would not see it until… OH WHAT THE HELL! Okay, I hadnt triggered it…barely. But the close shave was unnerving enough. I managed to calm myself before confronting The Boy, who was snugly in his bed (beneath which: no mouse traps). Hey! You in the bed! You get your butt out here and move this trap and OH MY GOD. Were you TRYING to catch me? You know Im clumsy and dont pay attention to my surroundings! How could you put it here? What were you thinking? WHY ARE YOU STILL IN BED? Move it NOW. NOW NOW NOW. And if you missed it the first time: OH MY GOD. Gotta give The Boy credit, he moved so fast he practically left a vapor trail. Meanwhile I had a Pop Tart to soothe my jangled nerves. It would be awful if I left the rest of the box, stuffed with its Pop Tart brethren, under someones bed.
