Over the next five days, I will be sharing my 5 point plan with 1 point shared per day. I hope as you read, you will get to know me better and understand why I am so passionate about wanting to become your next Lt. Governor. Education Two of the primary reasons I decided to run for Lt. Governor are my son and daughter. Like any parent, my greatest aspiration is to have my children get a good quality education and be able to realize any dream in life he or she has. And I don’t believe they should have to leave their home state in order to do so. There is no reason our K-12 public education system should offer anything less than an excellent education for every child – particularly when you consider the amount of money our state commits to education annually. However, we are still lagging behind the majority of other states in public education. Our tax dollars allocated to education are consistently misspent, misused and misappropriated and we must find a more efficient way to spend those dollars. Recently, Governor Haley unveiled the K-12 Education Reform Initiative, a bold plan to transform our public school system. The imitative is the result of a collaborative effort led by the governor that included members of the General Assembly, teachers, administrators, business leaders and stakeholders working together to identify the challenges facing public education and to determine how best to overcome them. I fully support this initiative and believe it is the best solution offered in recent history to improve education in South Carolina. In addition, I am firmly against the current form of Common Core because I don’t believe the “cookie cuter” or “one size fits all” approach to educating our children serves our children well. That’s simply not realistic. Each child learns differently. For example, my son is currently in the 7th grade and excels with the instructional methods offered at his school. However, my daughter who is in the 5th grade is better equipped at this time to excel in a homeschool environment – so my wife, who is a teacher, homeschools our daughter. It is true that we have some difficult challenges to overcome in education but we are leading the nation in other academic areas. The Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics in Hartsville, which I’m proud to say my dad was instrumental in co-founding, was recently named by the Washington Post as one of the top performing schools with elite students in the United States. The school is a two-year public boarding school for 11th and 12th graders from around the state focusing on science, technology, engineering and math with an emphasis on economics and entrepreneurship. As your next Lt. Governor, I will continue my family’s legacy of supporting the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics and will work with Governor Haley to ensure the implementation of K-12 Education Reform Initiative.
