PCRG News Release No: 07-13-52 Authority: PCSUPT SONNY YANGA DAVID PNP Police Community Relations Group Tel: 724-9863 Fax: 722-0659 pcrg.pnp.gov.ph Date: Tuesday, July 09, 2013 FORMER NPA SUPPORTERS PLEDGE BACK THEIR ALLEGIANCE TO THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT Residents from Brgy. Mantiquil of Siaton, Negros Oriental have relinquished their support for the New People’s Army (NPA) after the rebels destroyed infrastructures built around their town. They have surrendered to the Philippine government, and it was a sure sign of the weakening hold of the rebels among the natives of the region. According to Major Ray Tiongson, chief of the 3rd Division Public Affairs Office of the Philippine Army, residents have reasoned out that for years they have faced tumultuous difficulties in caring for the rebels in their homes, and can no longer remain steadfast to the rebels’ cause which is one filled with hate. The residents are composed of nine members from the Sangay sa Partido sa Localidad (SPL) headed by Rosalie Nama, and 19 members of Yunit Militia (YM) of Lubos na Asosayong Masa (LAM) headed by Diosdado Nama. They returned to the 79th Infantry (Marasigan) Batallion under Lieutenant Marion R. Sison. These 28 individuals were used as underground informants by the rebels and their subsequent surrender was a result of their belief that the NPA were feeding them lies and so they came to a decision to pledge back their allegiance to the Philippine government. This was a small victory that may be the start of a progressive pursuit to capture the rebels and liberate the towns they have infested.
