PERMA-CHINK SYSTEMS | NEWS 2014 | FALL ISSUE • Lower Your Energy Consumption & Get Your Home Ready For Winter: The most important task of fall maintenance is to ensure that your log home is properly sealed and ready for the cold winter months ahead. Properly sealed joints and gaps go a long way in preventing cold drafts during the winter. In these days of rapidly rising fuel prices it is important to keep cold air from entering your home. Additionally, it is enviornmentally friendly to avoid access energy consumption. The good news is that we have products that are specifically designed for the purpose of sealing your hometo lower your energy consumption. Although Perma-Chink Systems is rapidly becoming recognized as a premium stain manufacture, we orignally built our reputation on our line of chinking and sealants. So what are we talking about when we refer to chinking and sealants? As they relate to log homes, sealants are materials used to seal gaps, cracks, nooks, spaces, seams , joints and other areas where air or water can penetrate into the home. Most people call these material caulk but we refer to them as sealants to differentiate our high quality products from the lesss effective caulks that can be bought at any hardware store. Plus several of our sealants do not fit the conception most people have of typical caulk. Getting back to the basics, sealants are plastic like compounds that typically come in tubes or pails. Once applied and allowed to dry and cure they may stay soft pr turn hard depending on the type of product used. If you look around youll see all kinds of sealants in use. The winshield of your car is held in place with sealants to prevent water from getting inside. Theres a bead of sealant around your bathtub to keep water from seeping under the tiles. All of your windows have sealants around the glass to prevent cold air and rain from getting into your home. If you look close, youll see there is wide range of physical difference in them. The best sealants are those that stay flexible in a wide range of temperaturem sun light, and other enviornmental conditions. • So Why Do People Use Perma-Chink Sealants? First and foremost, to keep water, air and bugs out of the places where dont belong; second, for their attractive appearance; and third, for their proven reputation of lasting longer on and preforming better than any other products lm the market. It should not come as a surprise that log homes are a bit difficult to seal up. When stack logs on top of one another to make a wall , there are usally gaps that have to be sealed to prevent air and water from getting inside. Thats what Energy Seal is designed to do. Energy seal is a textured acrylic polymer sealant that provides a long lasting resilient seal for any style of log home. Since logs constantly twist, turn, swell, expand and shrink with changing weather conditions, gaps may appear between other areas of the home. These gaps retain moistureand allow the seepage of air and water into the home. Energy Seal eliminates these gaps by forming a flexible air and water tight barrier over them. There are two reason why Energy seal is textured. First, it allows th surface to acheieve a consistent flat look. It does not have that shiny look to blend in with the surrounding stained wood. Second, the texture allows energy seal to better accept a stain so that it can virtually disappear on a wall. Here is a tip: if you plan to stain over Energy Seal use a color thats just a bit lighter than the stain you plan to use. its just much easier to cover light colored Energy Seal with a darker color stain that it is to cover dark colored Energy Seal with light $$$$ Energy Seal and Perma-Chink may also qualify you for energy tax credits!
