PHD STUDENT FELLOWSHIPS Chromosome structure and transcriptional regulation (Luca Giorgetti’s group) INTERNATIONAL PhD PROGRAM The Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI) is an international biomedical research center with more than 300 members, including approximately 200 postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, dedicated to basic research in areas of relevance to human health and disease in Basel, Switzerland. We invite applications for internally funded LUCA GIORGETTI’S RESEARCH INTEREST To establish and maintain complex gene expression patterns, cells require precise control of transcription. In mammals this involves trans-acting factors, such as transcription factor binding to promoter-proximal regulatory sequences, as well as cis-acting elements, such as distant cell- type specific enhancers interacting with promoters in the three-imensional nuclear space. Both cis and trans regulation involve stochastic molecular events, which may contribute to generating gene expression variability between cells and over time, and may be functionally relevant for example in the context of developmental cell fate transitions. It is thus fundamental to quantitatively characterize the cell-to-cell and temporal variability of chromosome structure and its interplay with transcription factor binding. Our research combines physical modeling of chromatin structure, chromosome conformation analyses, high-resolution and quantitative microscopy with genetic engineering in mammalian cells, in order to quantitatively analyze the three-dimensional structure of chromosomes, and to unravel the interplay between chromosome structure and transcriptional regulation. Candidates with backgrounds in quantitative sciences (e.g. physics) or biology are encouraged to apply. The PhD requirement is a completed Masters in any scientific field. The PhD will be awarded from the University of Basel. A typical PhD requires 3-4 years at the FMI. Interested candidates should apply to the normal FMI PhD Program at fmi.ch/phd MORE INFORMATION Luca Giorgetti [email protected] (until 3/2015) APPLICATION DEADLINE November 30, 2014 Maulbeerstrasse 66 CH-4058 Basel T +41 61 697 66 51 F +41 61 697 39 76
