Nine young men(if you can call them "humans"..) enter the pond and start to tear the goat apart by bare hands and by mouth by biting the poor little one..like real savage cannibals.. grasping its legs, its ears, its genitals, its hoof and its tail and then they are tearing it apart alive until her slow and painful death !!! an extremely very very sadistic process !! The one who manages to kill the goat is the ‘hero’ and leads the Shinkali dance which is held afterwards. Khokana residents have witnessed the extreme barbaric scene year by year out. in my view those young "mens" must be considered like a "perverts satanic clan" and have nothing to do with so-called "humans" only "verminous people" can behave like this ! -------------- ➨ EMAILS: SAMPLE LETTER, courtesy of Stop Animal Sacrifice ! To Whom It Concerns, I would like to express my deep concern about extreme cases of animal cruelty being conducted in the name of religion in Nepal. In Nepal, animal sacrifice is widely practiced. There are no rules of regulation; rather, the government supports blood sacrifices by providing subsidies.Apart from regular sacrifices at Goddess temples, extreme cruelty is conducted at certain festivals including the live skinning and burning of animals, slow killings through throat slitting, killing with unsharp knives, public beheadings, et cetera. In particular, I refer to the Khokana Festival, held in August, during which a terrified goat is thrown in the Deu-pond close to the Rudrayani temple, after which the animal is torn apart whilst still alive by a group of young men. No one can adequately explain why this practice is carried out year after year – except to say that it is ‘traditional’. This, however, is not a valuable argument to continue this practice. Nepal, realizing the adverse effects, has abolished a number of ‘traditions’ in the past, including human sacrifice and widow burning. I encourage the government of Nepal to abolish the above practice for the following reasons: 1. It hurts the goats – contrary to what many believe, animals suffer tremendously before and during sacrifice. They are generally hurt during transportation, starved and dehydrated, and they are often purposely killed slowly and painfully, as it is believed that the goddess prefers slow deaths. 2. It hurts us – cruelty against animals harms society as a whole; it signals and normalizes insensitivity in children who can become numb to the suffering of living beings, and it is also proven to influence certain people to commit violence on other humans. 3. It strengthens vested interests – sacrifices generally boost the interests of those who benefit from superstition-based beliefs and rituals. As Nepal is moving ahead to become a more fully democratic, egalitarian society, it is crucial to challenge age-old beliefs which are not beneficial and drain the resources of the poor and needy. 4. It contradicts the spirit of laws – Nepal is concerned about the welfare of its precious flora and fauna, and has signed a number of international Wildlife Treaties. The cruelty displayed in this so-called tradition completely contradicts the spirit and gestures of these treaties and acts. 5. It is bad for tourism – As tourists are abhorred by such practices, the festival will have an adverse effect on tourism, an industry which provides the country with much-needed financial returns. Those foreigners who experience or come to know the extent of sacrifice in this country leave Nepal traumatized, disgusted, and deeply saddened, rather than uplifted by its paradoxical beauty and friendliness. I urge you to end the violent practice at Khokana and help Nepal move towards a truly peaceful country, and in keeping with its international image. This can be done by introducing and enforcing a much-needed Animal Welfare Act and promoting genuine animal welfare activities across the country. I trust that the government of Nepal will support these measures, which are becoming more popular by the day, globally, and thus promote non-violent cultural practices in Nepal. Until such a time, however, it will be necessary to boycott Nepal both as a tourist and via commerce as well as encourage others to participate in a boycott as well. Please permanently end blood festivals nationwide. I urge you to begin with the upcoming Khokana Festival, during which revelers pitch a frightened young goat into a pond. Men wade into the pond to beat, bite and tear apart the 5-6 month old animal. A "hero" who ultimately kills the goat then leads participants in a celebratory dance. Prior to this violent spectacle, the animal is transported without food or water. She is intentionally killed in a slow, painful manner thought to gratify deities. Like other blood rites in Nepal, the annual Khokana is outright cruelty posing as sacred tradition. Clergy leaders themselves have proposed fruits and vegetables in place of animal offerings. I call upon your mercy and integrity as fellow human beings: Please replace brutal animal sacrifice with non-living symbols such as cloth, flowers, fruit, banners, candles, flags… Bloodless rituals do not alienate tourists or cut revenue from Nepal’s tourism industry. They stop a cycle of violence that desensitizes young participants to the suffering of others. Moreover, cruelty-free religion portrays Nepal as a modern nation in sync with the rest of the world. Nepal has made great strides to protect wildlife under international treaties. An enforceable Animal Welfare Law that shields animals from all forms of abuse, including blood rituals, would further enhance Nepal’s image as a nation with moral fortitude. I respectfully ask you to spare goats in the August Khokana Festival and ban all events that skin, burn, behead, knife, or otherwise torment live animals as religious sacrament. Any tradition built upon the anguish of others contradicts the very essence of religion and is without merit or justification. Thank you, YOUR FULL NAME... During Khokana’s Deopokhari festival, organized annually in August, a 4-6 months old a female goat is sacrificed by being thrown into a pond where nine young men, one from each ward, attack it and bite it to death. The one who ultimately kills the goat is named the ‘hero’ and leads a dance procession. Khokana VDC sponsors the festival by contributing around NRs 100,000. (Rupees) As in the past years the Khokana Goat Festival will be celebrated this year as well. But this time a major change in local people’s attitudes. Khokana now has many youths and community leaders who are aware of the negative aspects of the festival and want to stop this cruel ritual. The process of the ritual is actually a very long one...the goat suffers for at least 40 minutes before she succombs slowly slowly with extreme pain and suffering.. The "savage" team who wins during the process of killing the goat must have performed different cultural dances and dramas throughout the year. However, nowadays people are busy with jobs in the city and hardly have time toper form any kind of dances and dramas. Therefore the dead goat is unwanted and the youth, after the game, don’t want to take it to their village. It is not clear why and when the cruel goat-killing was introduced.. Locals believe that when children started to drown in the pond in the 12th century, residents started to drown a live goat to appease the gods.. However, there is evidence showing that devotees in former times offered fruits and flowers in the temple and that the act with the struggling goat was introduced to create a "spectacle" !!!
