PRESS STATEMENT THURSDAY 15-01-2015 PEACE PACT: PRESIDENT JONATHAN SHOULD SHOW BEST EXAMPLE - OLULADE The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to show best example and first point of call for peace propagation in the country in view of the heat surrounding the February General Elections in the country. The call was made in view of the peace accord brokered by distinguished senior citizen of Nigeria the former Secretary General of the Commonwealth Chief Emeka Anyaoku and HE Mr Kofi Anan the former Unuited nations Secretary General among other dignitaries. The peace accord persuaded all Presidential candidates under various parties to sign the NO-VIOLENCE pact but with specific emphasis on the two most prominent party flag bearers President Goodluck Jonathan of PDP and General Muhammadu Buhari of APC. The pact was signed in Abuja yesterday. Olulade, the spokesperson of the House observed that if peace is to reign, President Goodluck Jonathan should be seen as genuinely committed to peace and politicking devoid of hate speeches and actions at all levels. In his words, “if President Jonathan can show best example as peace ambassador, it will be difficult for any Nigerian citizen to go against his peace philosophy and model as far as electoral activities are concerned. The body language of Mr President matters a lot to Nigerian citizens and party members. If opposition party leaders are clamped down by partisan security agencies and Mr President does not condemn it, or opposition party members shot openly on their way to party rally and Mr President refuses to condemn it, then the communication and the inherent message is simple and clear”. He added that Mr President also needs to caution the people speaking for him. Personalities like Dokubo-Asari has been going around uttering inflammatory statements capable of breeding violence but Mr President has never condemned or caution him once. The likes of his Special Assistant on Public Affairs Doyin Okupe, his campaign team spokesperson Femi Fani-kayode and numerous others who attack everyone that maintain contrary opinion to Mr President’s policy should be cautioned and called to others. Mr President should let the example start with him so as to make it easier for every other concerned persons or group to follow suite. The Epe Constituency II representative in the House noted that it will not be too long before Dokubo-Asari or the likes come out again spitting fire and attacking opposition. He added that in President Jonathan’s previous campaigns, he has not helped matter at fostering peace accord. I hope Mr President will respect the peace pact. I hope we can be able to see a peaceful model to emulate from our President. The number one citizen should live above board but contrary has been the case. But this time around, we hope President Jonathan will make peace possible. In his conclusion, Olulade expressed confidence that the opposition (APC) will emerge victorious in the February poll if Presidency provides level-playing ground for all. “We will emerge victorious and the nation will progress for better after February 2015 poll, we are confident”, he said.
