PURPLE BLOOD I became friends with David after he sold me a sandwich the other day of off 96th street. He ended up sitting down at my table and we had authentic and organic conversation. He shared with me a challenge that he faces daily. He asked if he could recite his poetry so I could understand more about him. It was one of those moments where words cant describe the feelings. But this is what he said. Purple Blood by David Dunn The Earth doth wonder If we can feel We of Purple Blood Wonder what’s real The Sky doth Thunder Its Laws of Steel To us it’s as Mud For we do not Heal We see what is not We of this tribe Our feelings are such That we can’t describe. Clarity we’ve sought But we can’t surmise How without a crutch We are paralyzed They say we’re demented But we are afraid To in your World Forever stay. Nothing is cemented There are no frames We become unfurled As our nerves become frayed. Isolation, it doth Burn And pierce us like a blade With time our bright ember From here it shall fade. The Earth continues to turn With it we fall to gray But will you all remember What you used to say? We had something to offer. You said we had potential Until you saw our Blood You thought we were substantial. But hope do you still foster? Are we not essential? Or are we naught but Mud? With our problems, mental? They say it’s just delusion That we cannot Fly Hindered by disillusion. But we can always try. We use our substitutions To prepare a reason why Our World lay in Confusion As our grip in your World dies. Please do not cross reference us With the criminal or insane Don’t even try To Classify Purple Blood is not to blame. You might think that just because The affliction bears our name. And when you try To Classify You see us as the same. Did you not believe That we have A Beautiful Mind? When you saw us on the screen Our Purple Blood defined. It’s true that, yes We may seem strange But I must address We cannot change. The Blood is mixed It flows through our veins Not much can fix Our altered brains. I’ve tried to help I’ve tried to flood My body’s Wells With Red and Blue Blood. But from my Pores It doth spew Blood from my Core That Purple Hue. We drown in our insanity Crying out for the remedy You flee in fear but can’t you see? We need you to regain stability Please do not fear The Blood of Purple hue Please do not shun Of friends we have few No one comes near With their blood red and blue From us do they run But we shall not pursue. Earth, be as the Sky And Sky, be One with the Earth And may both always try To see what we’re worth. We’re not just mad And we’re not all bad Like you we were born Of a mom and a dad. Purple Blood are human, too As such we can Feel Even if we lose It, and don’t know what’s real.
