Paul McCartney sponsors Japanese sumo-wrestling team to promote album Sir Paul McCartney has sponsored a sumo-wrestling team to promote his latest album in Japan. The 71-year-old singer-songwriter paid to have the sleeve of his album New plastered across the arena during the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament in the city of Fukuoka. According to NME, the former Beatles spokesman confirmed that the star is a big fan of the sport. Bizarrely Macca really got into sumo wrestling when he first toured Japan (as a solo artist) in 1993, they explained. He took his crew to one of the matches when they were over there recently and was explaining to everyone the rules and the scoring and how it all worked. McCartney also flew in to attend the tournaments final match, which took place last Sunday (November 24). The match they went to was like the FA Cup Final or Wimbledon of sumo wrestling, his spokesman added. Between rounds, traditionally dressed Japanese people were carrying New album cover artwork on bamboo billboards around the stadium! Sir Paul McCartneys New is among the releases nominated for this years Art Vinyl prize. The award recognises the years best music artwork, with The Temper Trap, Keane and Muse receiving accolades in 2012.
