Penny asks: I have a question: I know a very nice family who raises sheep but are interested in buying a pair of goats from me (2 does in milk). They asked me if next year, I would be willing to breed the does for them w/ one of my bucks. I told them that I would be agreeable. They have been waiting patiently for my 2 does to kid and last week they did. I contacted them to let them know that the does would be available soon. They informed me that they would need to wait awhile due to an outbreak of Sore Mouth in their herd of sheep, but as soon as it was cleared up, they would be ready for my goats. I read up on Sore Mouth and discovered that it is highly contagious and even after the sores are cleared up, the virus can linger on the property for years. Now I am very hesitant to sell them my does and I certainly dont want to do breedings w/ my buck b/c I do not want this disease in my herd. Can anybody tell me if what I read is correct? Am I overreacting? This is a very nice family and they care a lot about their animals. This has been a very bad lambing season due to the harsh winter and they have been devastated over all this. But I need to protect my herd too. I would like to know what others experience w/ Sore Mouth has been. Thank you!
