People are surprised to hear that The Shawshank Redemption was not a big hit when it first came out. But you have to put that kind of thing in context. It opened in October of 1994, the same time as Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump and Jurassic Park. Today we know its a brilliant motion picture.
