Perspective Not wanting to, I decided to stop by the local Walmart to pick up a few household items before Christmas closing. As I stood in line with laundry detergent, dish detergent, paper towels, Coke, and a bag of chips - frantic shoppers were still buying gifts to go under the tree for a few hours. While Im not against gift giving, I do think in many ways, weve lost the true meaning of Christmas. Im also not saying that my parents did everything right either, but when we were children, my brothers and I woke up to fruit, candy, pecans and walnuts in a brand new pair of church/school shoes and a pair or two of pants and a shirt. To get a toy was, many times, questionable. Our father, who was also our pastor, would talk to us about the meaning of Christmas and why we needed to be thankful. The younger kids, me and my brother Demetrius Jones got some toys, while the older kids, got the other stuff. As we got older, we got bikes and things, but we always kept the right perspective of Christmas. Christmas is not about how many gifts are under the tree, but should be about celebrating the birth of Christ. Now, everyone knows that no one knows the exact day of Christs birth, but that December 25 is the day that has been set aside to recognize His birth. However, many forget about that as they over spend and go into deep debt buying gifts and the like. I wonder how different our lives would be if we gave gifts throughout the year, not just on special occasions. Wonder what it would be like if we budgeted a certain amount to spend, made/saved that amount and had no debt when Christmas rolled around. Wonder what it would be like to spend each day living life to its fullest, enjoying life as it comes rather than waiting for a particular day to see the smiles of those you love opening gifts? Set a goal for yourself to begin today to do just that - live in the now. You just might discover that life can be really good. Go ahead - find lifes sweet spot. Have yourself a Merry Christmas.
