Petroglyphs are the carvings and line drawings on rocks by native americans or other prehistoric people.in the united states. Petroglyphs can be found throughout the west, especially in New Mexico, Northern California and in reserved sites throughout Utah and Montana. Images depicted include humans, deer, elk, buffalo ,turtles, thunderbirds, arrows and nondescript shapes. Dating back 5,000 years in some places, these glyphs are speculated to have served many functions: recording important events, depicting sacred ceremonies, and emphasizing the importance of animals and hunting. The images were picked onto the natural rock surface by making a series of small pits, using a hard stone or or piece of antler, struck with a hammerstone. These mysterious links to the past help us understand the cultures that came before, what was important to them, and what they wanted us to remember about them. Little Bear.
