Ph.D. Programme in Life Sciences @ L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad Applications are Invited for the Ph.D. Programme in Life Sciences at the L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Hyderabad, is a well known eye care centre, with active emphasis on research (basic and translational) focused on the biology of the eye. It is recognized as an ‘Associate Institution’ by the University of Hyderabad for undertaking research in the Departments of Biochemistry and Animal Sciences at the School of Life Sciences of the University of Hyderabad. LVPEI is also recognized as an off-campus centre for its Ph.D. programme by the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. LVPEI has a full-fledged set of well equipped research labs with recent and high throughput facilities in the areas of biochemistry, molecular and stem cell biology, genetics, microbiology and vision physics. All research work done at the Institute is connected with aspects of the eye aimed for translation in medical care and is done in close collaboration with the in-house ophthalmologists. The research work undertaken in this Institute has been published in major high impact journals (both national and international). Its research work is funded generously by national and international granting agencies. The research arm of LVPEI is formally called the Hyderabad Eye Research Foundation (HERF). For details of current research activities and publications of HERF, LVPEI, please access lvpei.org We invite applications from candidates interested in joining the Ph.D. programme on: • Biomarkers for eye diseases (using genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics approaches). • Functional understanding of the pathogenic mutations in some of candidate genes for Retinal Dystrophies, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathies and Cataracts. • Genetic epidemiology of ocular eye diseases in the state for Andhra Pradesh (APEDS III). • Identification of novel genes for Retinitis Pigmentosa, Diabetic Retinopathies and Keratoconus. • Development of diagnostic tools for rapid detection of pathogens in specimens from ocular infection and studying the host response factors for better prognosis. • Stem cell based therapy for different eye conditions. Eligibility: Only candidates with a M.Sc./M.Tech./M.B.B.S. degree or equivalent degree with at least 55% marks will be considered. However, for candidates awaiting their results, provisional admission with special permission of the Director may be allowed. While preference is given to those qualified in the UGC/CSIR NET JRF or have other equivalent fellowship like DBT, ICMR, INSPIRE, NBHM, ICAR, etc., others are also encouraged to apply. Selection procedure: All eligible candidates will be given a written test, followed by personal interview and selection for admission will be based on the ranks obtained in the combined test plus interview.
