Last year, I was suicidal and bedridden with cancer. Most recently, I gave a speech alongside the Mayor of Vancouver … all while wearing bunny ears and embarrassing myself for your enjoyment. The speech was about how economic inequality is bad for our health and why sharing is better. I almost didnt make it because my energy is generally unpredictable. But the host kindly allowed me to nap in a room and gently knocked on the door when it was my turn to speak. I wasnt sure if it would make any impact. After I gave the speech, a young person said, This was the best speech ever, the fact you came here is so special. Youre right on the money about the root causes, an elder said. Others shared stories on how the economic motives of the tar sands was giving skin cancer and other illness to indigenous people. Inequality reduces civic engagement too. Less trust means less voters, They shared my sentiments about how affordable housing, loneliness and pollution are symptoms of an underlying condition. Im sharing this story as a reminder to myself when I have a bad day. But also to inspire you to never give up. I know its hard to see the future when everything seems hopeless right now. I was in your shoes and I still am sometimes. Please dont abandon your life or your dreams. Dont give up. We need you. The world needs you to share your gifts. And dont wait too long until youre perfect or have it all figured it out. Being vulnerable is a form of strength. Youre beautiful and good enough right now in this moment.
