Point 8 of 10 Note: If you haven’t seen the previous points - TopicsExpress

Point 8 of 10 Note: If you haven’t seen the previous points then go back to earlier postings, the first one being on 14/08/2013. Why have I written a book rather than a computer program? Again, as I said in Point 3 of 10, budgeting is a skill – a skill that used to be passed from one generation to the next. However, with the advent of the computer age with its electronic banking and plastic cards etc, that skill has been lost. I’m a great believer that the best way to learn any skill is by doing the work yourself rather than someone else doing it for you. Applied to budgeting, that means actually putting a pen to paper, doing calculations and recording all entries correctly, rather than typing something on a key board for the computer to do everything for you, without you having to give much thought to what you are doing. By this I mean, that if you make an entry in the wrong place, or you don’t make the entry correctly, then, although the computer will automatically do the calculations for you, it will not know if your entries are correct or not. When you receive your bank statement it will show one figure and your budget will show a different figure. Of course you will blame the computer program, but it will not be the fault of the program, the fault will lie with you in that, because you have not understood what you should have done, you made an incorrect entry. (I will give you more detail about incorrect entries in Point 10 of 10). The book I have written – ‘My Budget Mate’ – teaches budgeting by learning through understanding, where everything you need to know about budgeting is explained in great detail, with plenty of examples that explain the points being made. It is also a workbook – where you actually work in the book – from working through some activities, answering some questions, actually practicing doing a budget, and then starting your budget in the pre-ruled pages at the back of the book. See more at mybudgetmate This is a big book, for which I make no apologies, so keep watching this space for Point 9 of 10 where I will go into more detail of why ‘My Budget Mate’ is a big book.
