Polarization in Turkey is at Its Highest Level A recent study of PEW Research Center has showed that polarization in Turkish society is at its highest level. PEW’s statistics state that Turkish people are divided in two on Prime Minister Erdoğan’s politics, Turkish economy and anti-government protests. According to this research, 51% of Turkish people are satisfied with their country’s direction while 44% is not satisfied. 48% of citizens say that they appreciate Prime Minister Erdoğan’s influence on Turkey while the same amount of people says the opposite. 46% of Turkish people believe that economy is on its track while 50% says that economy has a negative status. 40% of citizens oppose anti-government protests, like Gezi Park demonstrations. On the other hand, 49% says that they support such movements. 78% of AKP (government party) supporters state that they are happy with the current situation of Turkey. But only 11% of CHP (main opposition party) supporters say that they approve the current situation of Turkey. According to PEW’s research, support to AKP and Erdoğan increases as people become more religious and conservative. 79% of people who pray 5 times or more in a day approve the politics of AKP government. 72% of religious people have sympathy for the actions of police, 60% of them trust the judiciary system and 47% of them believe that media has a positive influence on Turkish society. Furthermore, as the people become more religious, their support to anti-government protests decreases. For example, 52% of citizens who pray 5 times or more in a day oppose anti-government protests while 26% of less religious people oppose such actions.
