Poolside, Luxor, Egypt What a couple! He - Greek/French, mid-thirties, a marine biologist with a TV series, bronzed and green-eyed, enthusiastic, worldly, yet boyish at the same time - each afternoon surrounded by his friends, sprawling poolside on aluminium chairs and sunbeds. She - I don’t know what - but she was sensational, as pretty as the nineteen-year-old Audrey Hepburn. Her daily promenade around the gardens caused even the birds to shut up; her smiling arrival at dinner caused the waiters to drop spoons. He was always fussing his pet - a magnificent Bengal Tiger cat, who sat in the cool undergrowth watching everything. And it was the cat that enabled me to get into his charmed circle - I drifted across and started to make comments. His friends, speaking French, turned out to be his filming team. The sun was directly overhead, hardly any shadow. People splashing about in the pool. And then SHE came sashaying over the hot tiles - cropped, wide trousers, a sleeveless T-shirt so white it hurt my eyes. She put her glass on the table - it was streaming with condensation - and sat next to me. We had a conversation of sorts, but cannot remember much. What I do recall are three things…the whiteness of the T-shirt against her thin, brown shoulder…the perfect arm…the slim diamond bracelet flopping around her left wrist.
