Posted on: September 4, 2013 Broken Arrow Water Supply Taste/Odor Issues The City of Broken Arrow has received several complaints this week concerning water quality; mainly poor smell and taste. Most have complained the water smelled and tasted dirty, earthy and musty. City workers were dispatched to locations throughout the system to test the water and to flush the area water lines. Water samples submitted to the Tulsa Health Department this week passed bacteriological requirements and exceeded the disinfectant requirements. The City of Broken Arrow’s water is safe for consumption. "Based upon known factors, the quality issue is probably related to the tremendous algae growth northeast Oklahoma has experienced this past summer," said Engineering and Construction Director, Kenneth Schwab. "We have had a substantial amount of rain, which increases runoff and conveyance of nutrients to our water sources." Due to the nutrient load increasing, the algae blooms have exploded in many locations throughout the state, specifically northeast Oklahoma. "We have this taste and odor issue every year to varying degrees," according to Jimmy Helm, Broken Arrow Water Plant Manager. "Based on prior years’ experiences, we anticipate these natural organic aesthetic issues will normalize soon." The City of Broken Arrow staff will continue to monitor the water quality.
