President hails medal shootout competition: The Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Robert Mugabe says the annual President’s Medal Shoot competition provides an ideal platform for the participants to improve their marksmanship which will ultimately enhance national security. Cde Mugabe also hailed the increase in the number of participants at this year’s competition which ended with a prize giving ceremony at Cleveland Rifle range this Sunday afternoon. Participants at this year’s competition were drawn from all the defence and security services of the country, which includes the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA), Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ), Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Zimbabwe Prison Services (ZPS) and the President’s Department. Other participants included private security companies and the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association. Several days of nail biting competition in which the participants battled to establish dominance culminated in Sergeant Chindito of the ZNA reigning supreme in the men’s competition after garnering 587 points. The win guaranteed a trophy, a gold medal and US$1000. Captain Masiya of the ZNA settled for second best while Sergeant Mugova of the AFZ finished third. The women’s competition which had a top prize of US$1000 and a trophy was dominated by the ZNA, which won gold, silver and bronze medals. Sergeant Fimba won the top accolade after amassing 510 points. Corporal Chakwakuka finished second 14 points adrift, while Corporal Chipere came third. In his speech at the prize giving ceremony, President Mugabe paid tribute to the President’s Department for successfully staging the competition on its own after co-hosting the event with the AFZ last year. He then underscored the importance of the medal shoot competition which he said provides an ideal platform for those in the security services of the country to enhance their shooting skills. "Marksmanship is a necessary skill if the security services are to carry out their duties efficiently. In this profession, one is occasionally called upon to carry out an extra-ordinary task that involves hostage taking or dealing with an assassin and this calls for marksmanship of highest order," said Cde Mugabe. The skills nurtured and developed by the President’s medal shoot competition play a significant part in enhancing national security. President Mugabe also hailed the increase in the number of participants at this year’s competition, especially female competitors. This year’s competition was held under the theme; ‘Nurturing Skills to Enhance National Security for Economic Development,’ as it is only when a nation feels secure that it has the confidence to initiate and successfully implement economic development programmes for the well-being of the people.
