Prior to the last of 10 qualifying rounds of the winter league some news from last weekend. It was all systems go again at Mallow Golf Club with the New Year celebrations getting pushed aside for another year at the expense of the golf. Round nine of the Winter League took centre stage again last week with hundreds of rounds being played in blustery conditions. The 2014/2015 edition of the Winter League has been the most successful to date with well in excess of 2000 rounds already being carded by over 20 teams. The penultimate round in the first phase of the competition may have been played in less than ideal conditions but that didn’t stop some exceptional scores being posted once more. Top of the pile was the 37 point tally from Ray O’Brien (18). The nine shot better than handicap score was one of the top point’s tallies of the whole winter season and was good enough to take the spoils by one point from local man Eric Griffin. The runner up (18) came home with 36 points which in turn was one better than third – which went to David Cusack (13). The club’s most consistent performer David Conway (1) took the gross prize with a magnificent 29 points. The lower prizes went to a host of regular top performers with Linus English (9) taking fourth with 34pts, Ray Buckley (17) coming in fifth on the same score which was the same as the next two players, Pat Corbett (15) and Mark Sheehan (16). 8th to 11th went to Gerard McCarthy (11), Paul Cosgrove (16), Sean Crowley (16) and Neil Riordan (14) who all posted scores of 33 points. Next Weekend will the conclusion of the stableford rounds as match-play awaits the top eight teams. Away from the course there was plenty to celebrate recently with the clubs annual St Vincent de Paul Christmas fundraiser again coming up trumps for one of the most deserving local charities. This year €1,000 was raised and presented to Dr Kevin Brennan who graciously accepted on behalf of The SVP. The Christmas charitable fundraiser is just one of a number of initiatives that the club undertakes to help the less well off in the locality.
