Publication Officer position with Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University About Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University The Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University (ACKU) is the premier library and research center in Afghanistan. ACKU was established in 1989 in Peshawar, Pakistan, as the ACBAR Resource and Information Centre (ARIC). Currently ACKU has over 90,000 books and manuscripts in Dari, Pashtu, English and other languages. ACKU is working to make as much of its collection available online as possible, through a digital repository linked to its online catalog. ACKU also runs an outreach program called ACKU Box Library Extension (ABLE) that provides libraries in a box to rural communities and high schools throughout the country. ABLE is the pioneer of box libraries in Afghanistan, aiming to enhance and encourage reading among people of all ages and abilities. Job Summary Job summary mainly includes following duties. follow-up and supervise all ABLE publication activities, supervise ABLE editorial board meetings, maintain contact with Afghan intellectuals including writers, translators, editors and recommend ABLE board of editors to exploit their expertise, maintain regular contacts with authors, translators, composers, illustrators, and also printing press to ensure the work is under process in accordance to the timeline and collect and purchase new relevant books for school and community libraries. Duties and Responsibilities 1) To supervise ABLE editorial board meetings 2) To arrange editorial board meetings, assist ABLE board of editors in the process of editing, proof reading and printing 3) To maintain contact with Afghan intellectuals including writers, translators, editors and recommend ABLE board of editors to exploit their expertise 4) To ensure selected subjects are in accordance to the need and cultural affairs of Afghan society 5) Finalize all proofs after reviewing of editorial board/ to circumvent any kind of mistakes remained 6) To ensure the quality and progress of printing issues 7) To provide contract for authors, translators, and other relevant parties for new titles in Dari and Pashtu 8) To keep track on distribution of new printed titles 9) To maintain regular contacts with authors, translators, composers, illustrators, and also printing press to ensure the work is under process in accordance to the timeline 10) To follow-up and supervise all ABLE publication activities 11) To generate reports and maintain proper filing system of ABLE publications activities 12) To collect and purchase new relevant books for school and community libraries 13) To help and facilitate preparation of libraries before distribution 14) To suggest possible locations( ex: villages, schools, communities), to establish new libraries 15) To assist ABLE on carry out survey, distribution, and monitoring of ABLE libraries, if needed 16) To undertake project management related task 17) Any other task assigned by management Qualification A degree in Social Science, Literature, Journalism, Political Science At least 3-4 years experience in Publication Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Afghanistan Excellent Dari, Pashto and English writing and speaking skills Computer literacy required: Ms Office Automation.
