RCSO Report on Weather Conditions – Wrap up for Day 1 Good evening to everyone in Rockdale County. We are wrapping up the end of Day 1 of the winter ice storm. As we have continued to monitor the weather forecast, the main concern for Thursday will be the ice on the roadways. Today, a lot of the snow & ice melted and became slushy. This will begin to freeze overnight and will make roadway conditions more treacherous for Thursday morning, possibly Friday morning as well. The RCSO will continue to ask for people to stay home and off the roadways. As the day went on today, we saw an increase in motorists taking to the roads. This was a dangerous decision for many motorists during the ice storm. The total RCSO accident response count for weather related calls for service over the past 24 hours is as follows: 5 Accidents with no injuries 1 Accident involving a deer 2 accidents with injuries Listed below is an update from the RCSO: 1. Sheriff’s Deputies are continuing to patrol and respond to calls for service. There have been no significant delays in RCSO response due to the weather. Our winter response/storm plan has been effective in ensuring adequate RCSO personnel were staged throughout the county to provide fast responses to downed trees, power lines, and accidents. 2. The Rockdale County Jail is functioning & operating with dedicated detention staff to keep the Jail safe and secure during the winter storm. 3. Deputies have been working to clear a number of downed trees from the roadways, some with power lines involved. We have had approximately 40+ trees or limbs come down, and deputies and Rockdale County Fire have been removing those as quickly as possible. Many of the fallen trees have been found by deputies on patrol. 4. There have been a number of power lines to come down – deputies have responded to those locations to ensure that no one nears these lines until the power company can remove the lines. 5. There remain a small number of power outages in the county right now – GA. Power & Snapping Shoals are working to restore power to those affected by power loss. 6. Rockdale County Public Schools, County Offices, and Courthouse are closed for Thursday. Rest assured that your RCSO is on the job 24/7 - as always! COUNTY ROAD CLOSURES: The city of Conyers still has the Parker Road Bridge closed. RCSO has closed Stanton Road at Rolling Hills Trail. The RCSO has Sigman Road from Milstead Road to Renaissance Way closed due to ice. WARNING: Weather Forecasts indicate that ice will continue to form on the roadways and will present a major problem for motorists who decide to take to the streets on Thursday. The additional ice is expected to make roadway conditions worse. The RCSO continues to issue the following warning: DO NOT DRIVE – STAY OFF THE ROADWAYS! Persons are asked to STAY OFF THE ROADWAYS and to NOT DRIVE. Please remain off all roadways within Rockdale County as the conditions of ice on the roadways make driving extremely dangerous. Please monitor your local weather station for continued updates on this major weather system. If you need emergency assistance, please dial 9-1-1 and allow emergency personnel to respond to your location. Use Caution: Watch for downed lines – DO NOT APPROACH any downed lines – LIVE WIRES contain deadly amounts of electricity. Parents should warn children to stay clear of any power lines that they may see, and to report back if they do see power lines down. Parents are urged to check areas before allowing children to play in areas where lines may be down. Call 9-1-1 to report downed lines. RCSO Weather Alert/WARNING - DO NOT DRIVE – STAY OFF THE ROADWAYS If you need emergency assistance - DIAL 9-1-1.
