Emmett Tyrrell, Jr., at “The American Spectator,” “The Economics of No Growth” This is a very stupid article. In my libertarian heart of hearts, I would like to see assistance to the poor completely turned over to private charities. I also agree the temptation for unscrupulous politicians to use government welfare programs to give themselves easy votes and lifetime tenure in office is overwhelming. Likewise to use the welfare system to control people. Also there ARE some people whose only goal in life is to make a career out of receiving welfare and laying on the couch watching television. Now that being said: Mr. DeMar’s article has cause and effect backwards. It is NOT welfare that is the reason the highest percentage of people in history are on food stamps or other assistance programs. It is because the job market sucks!!!! The job market doesn’t stink because the largest number of people in history are receiving assistance. The largest number of people in history are receiving assistance because there are so few jobs and the few available are part time at crummy wages. Most people forced onto assistance really want and need real jobs. With now the second highest business taxes of any country on earth, businesses about to get clobbered with huge but uncertain per-employee costs by Obamacare, and a totally in-your-face regulatory climate, is it any wonder there are so few jobs and wages are so low? It seems everyone I talk to around here either has been out of work over a year (or two years, or five years) or has a close friend or relative who has. There are foreclosed homes on every block and one of my customers told me he personally knew four people who committed suicide after losing everything. I have been job searching constantly for 10 1.2 years in spite of five degrees, 17 years work experience in my field, master auto and heavy truck mechanic certification, and being a published author. If you DO find a job it is usually part time with no benefits. Around two-thirds of the “new” jobs during the Obama years are part time. Many employers refuse to hire people who are not currently working at a nearly identical job because they simply don’t dare take any chances or be faced with any learning curve expenses in a new hire. For many people it is food stamps or starvation. The welfare system really gives very little assistance in spite of spectacular articles about the few people who have found ways to fraudulently “game” the system and collect tons of money. The reality for most people is hours of sitting on a hard plastic chair forced to listen to really bad Musak, to meet with a case worker who really can’t do that much for you. The welfare programs are really window dressing—false promises made by politicians to get votes from the naïve and high-paying administrative jobs for their cronies. The reality for the honest poor is little real help. The food stamp program itself is in reality a massive government subsidy to giant agribusiness sold as a way of helping the poor. Its primary goal is lots of government money for agribusiness corporations who contribute to liberal politicians. If it happens to actually help people now and again that’s nice. But it is NOT the primary goal of the program. It is mercantilist corporate welfare, NOT welfare for the poor. The ONLY thing that will get most people off welfare in into jobs is for there to BE jobs. And the only way for there to BE jobs is to stop persecuting the job-creators as if business profits were something taken from workers rather than the means by which their jobs and the goods they consume are financed. And to STOP subsidizing unscrupulous business people who use the government as an instrument of armed robbery rather than competing in serving people in the open market. Who is John Galt?
