RESERVOIRS AT RISK GROWTH THREATENS cluttered WATER QUALITY IN MAJOR URBAN AREAS OF THE COUNTRY DAM GUARAPIRANGA ( São Paulo , SP ) Polluted by sewage from squatter settlements and slums , the Guarapiranga reservoir suffered from demographic explosion : according Sabesp , the population in the region increased from 330,000 inhabitants in the 80 to 750 000 in 2000 . As a result, the cost of water treatment increased ten times in the past 15 years. How to remove all these people is impracticable, the state government promises to invest in slum upgrading and increasing the sewer main reservoir surrounding the city RIVER OF OLD FLOWERS VARGEM and dam ( Belo Horizonte , MG ) The state capital is supplied by these two sources with pollution problems. The dam Vargem Flores receives sewage from homes of their surroundings, while the Velhas river eventually contaminated by heavy metals dumped by the steel mills built along its banks . The good news is that the Rio das Velhas already showing signs of improvement after a process of revitalization started in the 90s Piracicaba river basin ( São Paulo State ) The water of this river and its major tributaries is polluted after passing in the area major cities such as Campinas and Limeira . But before all this filth , the state capital steals this system about 50 % of its supply capacity . Worse for the populous cities of the interior : with dirty rivers and with little drinking water rationing and water wheels are starting to become common in the region GROUNDWATER ( Recife , PE ) As the state capital has no permanent rivers able to provide water to its 1.5 million inhabitants , the way is to remove water from groundwater . The problem is that most of these reserves is compromised. First , the large amount of uncollected sewage seeps into the soil and pollute the sheets. Second , overexploitation has lowered reservoir levels , leaving the water with too much salt and damaging consumption Guandu River ( Rio de Janeiro , RJ ) Fouled by sewage , one of the main sources of capital Rio needs the help of the Paraíba do Sul river to reduce its pollution . Today , the Paraíba do Sul thickens the volume of Guandu six times compared to the original flow .
