Rabies Alert The following is from the Virginia Department of Health. If you are not sure if your pets Rabies vaccine is up to date, please give us a call 757-427-6120 The Virginia Beach Department of Public Health has received notification of a laboratory confirmed rabid cat on April 10, 2014. This is the third confirmed rabid animal identified in the City. This stray cat was found in the 1200 block of Warwick Drive, in the Scarborough Square neighborhood. In this case, the cat was seen following children to the school bus. Animal Control was able to capture the cat. The cat began to exhibit nuerugologcial symptoms while in the shelter. The cat was humanely euthanized and tested for rabies. There has been one human exposure to this cat. The person who placed the cat in the carrier was scratched. She is currently receiving post exposure prophylaxis for rabies. No one in the Animal Control shelter was bitten, scratched or exposed. No other animals in the shelter were exposed. A press release was sent out on Friday to ensure there were no other individuals exposed to this cat.
