Radcliff House Apartment Fire Update Charleston, SC (June 9th, 2013): At 12:44 PM units from the Charleston, Saint Andrews, James Island Fire Departments along with Charleston County EMS and the Charleston Police Department responded to The Radcliffe House, a five story apartment building, at 61 Vanderhorst Street. The first fire department unit arrived in less than 3 minutes from the time of dispatch and reported visible smoke conditions from the second floor of the building. Fire suppression crews located and extinguished the fire within 10 minutes of their arrival. No injuries were reported. Members of the Fire Marshal Division responded to investigate the fire. The fire originated in the living room of a second floor apartment. Two occupants were sleeping in the apartment at the time of the fire and escaped without injury. Based on the review of the fire damage, and occupant interviews, the cause of the fire is believed to be related to improperly discarded smoking materials in the living room. The apartment building was not equipped with a fire sprinkler system but each unit is equipped with smoke alarms. The two occupants from the fire apartment were displaced and the Red Cross was requested for assistance. The remaining occupants returned to their apartments after the smoke was removed from the building. The Charleston Fire Department would like to take this opportunity to offer a few simple safety tips: 1) Carefully dispose of smoking material in a non-combustible ashtray. Always dispose of smoking materials before falling asleep. 2) Install and maintain smoke alarms. 3) Become familiar with your escape plan. Residents of multi-story buildings should know and understand the available exits routes and stairwells before an emergency occurs. 4) Determine the location of fire extinguishers in your home or apartment. Fire extinguishers are designed to fight small fires. 5) Always call the fire department when an uncontrolled fire occurs. Please contact the Charleston Fire Department for additional advice or information. # # #
