Railways Budget 2014. Some highlights so far: *Bullet trains to start off with an already identified Mumbai-Ahmedabad sector. *Indian Railways spent Rs 41,000 cr on laying of 3,700 km of new lines in last 10 years: *Railway Minister says social obligation of Railways in 2013-14 was 20,000 crore rupees. *Sadananda Gowda proposed to extend online booking facility of railway retiring rooms to all stations. *Food courts at major stations for providing regional cuisine while onboard through emails, SMS and smartphones. *Sadananda Gowda says future projects to be financed on public-private partnership model. *Railways Minister says ten major stations of metro cities and important junctions would be developed to international standards with modern facilities. *Passenger amenities on the lines of newly developed airports through PPP mode. *Quadrilateral network of high speed rail connecting major metros and increasing speed of trains to 160 to 200 kilometres per hour in select nine sectors. *CCTVs to be used at stations for monitoring cleanliness at railway stations; third party inspections to be introduced. *Reservation system will be revamped and ticket-booking through mobile phones and post offices popularised.
