Rajgad Type :- Rajgad is a Hill fort. Height above sea level :- Rajgad is 4200ft (1280mtrs). District/Taluka :- Pune/bhor, Maharashtra, India. Minimum Duration of Rajgad :- 1-2 days. Base village of Rajgad :- Gunjawane,Pali. Difficulty level of Rajgad :- Medium but little tough while reaching at the end of the fort. Best time to visit Rajgad :- Any time you can visit Rajgad. Water Availability on Rajgad :- There is a water source which is near the Padmavati Temple which has water available whole year. Shelter on Rajgad :- 25-30 peoples can stay in Padmavati, temple. Government has initiated and built guest rooms on the top of the forts. Time to reach Rajgad :- It takes Around 2 hrs 30 mins from Gunjawane base village, and it takes around 3 hrs from Pali base village. Transport of Rajgad :- 1) Way from Pune to Rajgad :- From Pune there are ST(State Transport) buses are available from Swargate to village Gunjawane. Start early in the morning buses are Available to Gunjawane and you can also take buses to velha and get down at Gunjawane Phata, take share rickshaws and local transport to the village. By road one can take route from Pune-Satara road and reach Nasrapur Phata from there it takes you to Gunjawane. History of Rajgad :- Rajgad is the fort which Shivaji Maharaj had a lot of history related to him. Rajgad was known as the king of forts and capital of HINDAVI SWARAJYA. Shivaji Maharaj captured the fort in between 1646 to 1647 with other fort Torna. The forts where equally important to Maharaj but Shivaji Maharaj made Rajgad as capital of the forts because it was bigger than Torna in its size and was very hard to approach. Shivaji Maharaj reconstructed the forts with Three machis which are called as Suvela,Sanjavani and Padmavati machi. Rajgad saw many wars from 1960 Mughal king Aurangzeb sent his commander Shahistekhan to capture Rajgad but he couldnt succeed.Shahistekhan captured many villages nearby Rajgad ,but on April 6th of April 1663 Shivaji Maharaj raided his troops came back to Rajgad. In 1665 Rajgad was attacked by mughal sardars but they god a strong fight from the marathas and they couldnt succeed. Rajgad was of the forts which Shivaji didn’t loose while signing the Treaty of Purandar, in the same treaty he lost has 23 other forts. When shivaji Maharaj was jailed by Mughals he escaped from Agra on 12th sept 1666, he returned to Rajgad. Shivaji Maharajs first son Rajaram was born on 24th February 1670.Rajaram Maharaj took control of the maratha empire after the death of brother Sambhaji Maharaj in 1689 at the hands of aurangzeb. In the period 1671-1672 Shivaji Maharaj shifted his capital to Raigad from Rajgad and moved all his operations to Raigad from Rajgad. On 3rd April 1680 a bad day for maratha empire Shivaji Maharaj died From there after empire saw a downfall till 11th march 1689 Sambahji mMaharaj(Son of Shivaji Maharaj) was killed by mughals and there after they captured Rajgad by Kishoresingh Hada (Mughal Sardar). Marathas were not aware of the death of Sambhaji Maharaj and as the aim of Marathas was enough they united at the foot hills of Rajgad and any how captured the fort. Spots on Rajgad :- Padmavati Lake This lake is situated on Padmavati machi this lake has water all year around which provides water to the trekkers and visitors who visit the fort.
