Ramsses The Great (1279-1212 B.C). If king Zoser is famous for his Pyramid which is the 1st in history, if king Khufu is famous for being the builder of the greatest and largest pyramid everm and if Akhnaten was the most original and controversial among the rulers of Ancient Egypt , Ramsses II was undoubtedly the most illustrious. This king earned a tremendous reputation among contemporaries as well as later generations of Ancient Egyptians and sober esteem of modern scholars who accorded him the title (The Great). His building activity in the course of his long reign of 67 years is unparalleled. There is hardly a site that does not bear testimony to this kings presence. From the far western Delta to the sites in Wadi Tumilat and the magnificent city Per-Ramsses/ believed to be built by Hebrews once in Egypt in The East., from the administrative capital Memphis at the Northern end of the Nile Valley to the Rock cut temples of Abu Simbel , in Ancient Nubia , the name of ( Wser – Maat – Re Setep – En – Re) and his Royal figure stand out prominently on temples, places , tombs, fortifications and colossal statues. Ramsses II engaged Egypts principal enemy, (The Hittites), in a famous battle known as Kadesh on the Orontes River in Syria. Although the outcome of the battle was uncertain, Ramsses II ordered to carve its details on monuments which he erected. In year 21 of his reign, he signed a peace treaty with the Hittites, the details of which were carved on the walls of the Karnak Temple and Rhe Ramesseum, and others, . to seal the treaty, Ramsses II Accepted in marriage the daughter of the Hittite king , who came to Egypt with a large retinue and many gifts. Through his two principal wives, Nefertari and Isis-Nofret, and a large harem of lesser queens and concubines, Ramsses II fathered a prodigious number of Sons and Daughters (nearly 200).
