Red-tailed Hawk #006-15: WARNING, GRAPHIC IMAGES! We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to Bend Police Department, specifically Officer Lancaster, for picking up and transporting this juvenile hawk in severe distress. We are so happy that our local law enforcement agencies are willing to take these calls and immediately respond, to those they can, regarding wildlife in need. This is a small, but important, part of how the police are going above and beyond in serving our community. It appears that this raptor was caught in a leghold trap. This 820 gram bird was a first-year male (he hatched last spring). He suffered a compound fracture to BOTH tarsometatarsus, in the same location on each leg. His feet were each barely attached, connected by only tendons. The exposed bones were dried out, packed with dirt and obviously dead. Unfortunately, we quickly realized that there would be no option for this bird, other than humane euthanasia. *Each year, more than 4 million animals are trapped and killed for their fur in the United States. Millions more are trapped and killed in the name of “livestock” and “game” protection and for “nuisance” animal control. Whatever the purpose, the consequences for the trapped animals are the same — pain, suffering, and death. Proponents argue that traps are humane and selective, and that trapping is tightly regulated, an important source of income for many people, and necessary for managing wildlife. These claims, however, are far from the truth. We feel that there is no excuse for this cruelty and suffering.
