Remembering when I was a little girl, very little. I had a feeling my dad needed my company when he was working so hard all day on the farm and in the evening when he was milking cows in the old barn. On a cold day the cows were all lined up in the warm barn, chewing on grain and hay, steam rising, windows frosted. I was too little to carry the milk, hold a pitch fork but I could just about managed the hoe and I would pull some manure from under the cows and into the gutter. At times I would get tired or a bit cold. One time I decided it might be a good idea to warm up between two cows that had already been milked and they were just lying there. I slid easily between them an lay my body along the side of one old gal and was soothed by the warmth and the rise and fall of her great body as she was breathing. I closed my eyes. I then felt a great weight from behind me. The cow sleeping next to us decided to shift. I opened my eyes wide realizing I couldnt move. Not wanting to delay my dad in doing his chores, after all I was suppose to be helping, I tried to squeeze out. No luck. I was stuck. I wiggled and wiggled, still stuck. I gave up and was about to call for help when suddenly she let me go and stretched. I scooted quickly out. Next time I wanted to snuggle with a cow, I always chose one without a neighbor and never one against a wall.
