Rep. Joe Carr has announced that he is seeking your help to become Chairman of the State Republican Party and to bring enumerated conservative principles back into primary focus for the Tennesseans. Proper Leadership of the State Republican Party is critical for Republicans and Conservatives in Tennessee The election cycles since 2008 have proven that Tennessee government is now soundly in control of Republicans. As the August primaries proved in 2014, the battle for the future of Tennessee and the future of its citizens is no longer primarily between Democrats and Republicans. The battle is now between the segments within the Republican party. Because the Republican party controls Tennessee government, all Tennesseans have an interest in its proper functioning. Thus, the battle for the future of Tennessee is between conservative, constitutionally principled individuals in the Republican party and those who have misplaced their priorities or have become focused on priorities other than the Constitution, conservative principles, and a strong, enumerated platform of ideas. Presently, the state Republican party includes all of these factions. State party leadership must provide to all Tennesseans a platform of ideas and principles that clearly define what it means to be a conservative, what it means to be a true Republican, Part of that will require the development of an enumerated platform that will strengthen what the Party stands for, serve as a cornerstone for elected officials in areas not addressed in the constitutions. This battle looms now - right now - and demands your attention. The State Republican party is not controlled by the voters. Just as the voters elect Representatives and Senators, the voters also vote for 66 individuals who hold office as members of the State Executive Committee (sometimes called the SEC). This is the leadership body of the Republican party. Those 66 individuals - and only those 66 individuals - select the state chairman for the party. Some believe, rightly, that the Republican Party of Tennessee is at a unique and historic crossroads. That Party can no longer rely on a handful of the same old individuals to coordinate the actions for a party where the rank and file are increasingly discouraged by the directions of the leadership with issues such as Common Core, implementing ObamaCare, the 2nd Amendment, the 10th Amendment, proposing new sales taxes and repeated failures to honor campaign promises. The State Executive Committee is the governing body of the Republican Party in Tennessee. The Chairman of the Party serves at the pleasure of the State Executive Committee as stated clearly in the by-laws. When a state Party is governed in accordance with the bylaws there is accountability, transparency and integrity. The State Executive Committee must have a greater role in the governance of the Party and should no longer be just a “rubber stamp” for an agenda of a select few like Haslam. The State Executive Committee is accountable to the voters and must accept and honor that duty. This past August, a great number of conservative, constitutionally principled individuals ran for positions on the State Executive Committee in an effort to restore principled leadership and integrity to that Committee. Many of those challengers were lifelong Republicans who were not particularly supportive of the RINOs or Establishment but who were loyal to the Constitutions and conservative principles. Several of these were challenged by the Establishment and in some instances precluded from even being on the ballots because the Establishment declared that they were not bona fide Republicans. Frequently that disqualifying determination came from the state chairman and was not subject to any effective challenge. The good news is that many of these constitutional principled individuals won election to the State Executive Committee despite opposition and significant expenditures from the Establishment. That wave of change is a good, positive thing for those who seek to restore constitutional leadership and governance principles to Tennessee government. Soon the State Executive Committee will meet to select the state Chairman. Presently, the state Chairman is Chris DeVaney. We will not elaborate on all the reasons why Mr. DeVaney should not be reappointed to this position but there is plenty available to document that someone who intentionally disregards clear party rules - such as DeVaney has done - should not be in charge. Many of you already know and have supported Rep. Joe Carr. He has statewide recognition from his recent challenge to Lamar Alexander. He has spoken widely across the state on his views regarding the serious needs for accountability in government. Transparency in government. Truth in government. Integrity in government. Loyalty to the constitutions and constitutional oaths. All of these are important factors to consider in why Joe Carr should be the next state Republican party chairman. You have no vote but you do have options Now, only the 66 SEC members get to vote on this decision -- you have no vote. We can expect that these 66 individuals will receive heavy pressure from Haslam, Alexander, and others to be loyal and reappoint Mr. DeVaney perhaps because Mr. DeVaney has worked hard to protect these types of Republicans from challenges from conservative, constitutionally principled Republicans. In order to try to fix some of the problems with the state Republican party leadership, it is important that you let your preferences for party chair be known to these individual SEC members. It is important that you let these 66 SEC members know that you expect them to appoint the best person to serve as the leader of the State Party - someone who believes in, is loyal to and who trusts the wisdom of the Constitutions. It is important that you let these 66 SEC members know that you realize that they are going to receive pressure from Haslam and others to stay on the wrong path but that you are encouraging them to avoid that path and to return to a set of principles that are consistent with conservative, constitutional and principled governance. You can directly contact all 66 State Executive Committee members The state party website has the names, addresses, email addresses and phone numbers for all 66 state executive committee members. You can access this information now! Contact these members now! Not just your district but the members in all 33 districts. Why does this matter to TFA? TFA is a nonpartisan organization. TFAs mission is to protect and restore those rights that are identified in and protected by the Second Amendment and the Tennessee Constitution in Article 1, Section 26. That mission is beyond partisan debate because its a constitutional principle. However, TFA realizes that for now, in Tennessee, the Republican party is in control of state government and will be fore the foreseeable future unless something changes. TFA realizes that its important to support candidates and individuals who will put a priority on Constitutional principles. That means supporting individuals who are within a party who support the constitution and to seek to give control to those in party leadership who take the constitution as a core guiding principle above partisan matters. So long as the Republican party is a significant player in Tennessee government and policy, TFA members have an interest and a voice in who controls the Republican party in Tennessee.
