Residents Attribute Wednesday’s Earth Quake to Exploration of Oil Posted on July 4, 2013 By Emmanuel Ommona On Wednesday Evening, at around 9:55PM residents in the Albertine region experienced an earthquake which lasted for about 5 seconds. A number of residents claimed that it is related to the oil exploration in the region. Geoffrey Okema, a local resident in Nwoya district claimed that the earthquake was in relation to the oil exploration in Nwoya district. Okema claimed that a number of places have been dug up by oil exploration companies in the district which he thinks that it is the cause of the earth tremors. Julious Okello, a Geography Secondary school teacher in Gulu district believes that most of the activities related to oil exploration weaken the earth surface hence causing an earthquake. “The seismic events such as movement of rocks caused by petroleum exploitation can cause significant damage in the earth surfaces which result to earthquakes”, Okello said. However Steven Okino, another Geography teacher in Gulu argues that the earthquake is linked to the rift valley line. “The earthquake is linked to the rift valley and as you know very well the Albertine region is along the rift valley line, there is no doubt that the earthquake happened due to the valley which was created long ago”, Okino explained. Okino adds that there has been a series of earthquakes reported in the area over the years.
