Returned from a LAVA-scious birding trip with Pankaj Gupta covering Neora Valley NP and the famed Algarah Road on the way to Kalimpong , West Bengal. At 7.30 am on the 9th March (on our way back to Bagdogra) on the Algarah Road .... we were ambushed .... consider ... by a hunting party of ..... Black-eared Shrike-babbler, Rufous-winged Fulvetta, Rufous-capped Babbler, Yellow-throated Fulvetta Chestnut-crowned Warbler, Black-faced Warbler, Golden Babbler, Rufous vented Yuhina , Fire-tailed Sunbird and Green-tailed Sunbird ... that we could make out ... in the frenzy that ensued. As we were still grappling with the smallies on the ground ..... an awesome assault was launched from the top .... by the Scarlet Finch , Rusty-fronted Barwing and the incredible Himalayan Cutia ...... all this in a span of less than 3 minutes. We were dumbstruck by the action and managed to get only record shots of most of them. The other highlights of the trip are Rufous-throated Wren babbler, Tibetan Siskin Gold-breasted Fulvetta Nepal Fulvetta Yellow-cheeked Tit Grey-cheeked Warbler Brown Bullfinch Grey-chinned Minivet Red tailed Minla Bay Woodpecker Brown throated Treecreeper and witnessed the return migration of a large flock of quacking Bar-Headed Geese over Neora Valley on the 8th March 2014.The total count being 102 in all. Would like to thank Arka Sarkar for his able guidance of the trip , Bikram Grewal and Sumit Sen da for their wonderful trip reports in the Kolkatta Birders ... for reference.
