Round 10 P. Powning Wrap Up: The thirds played at the den against 16 players from Moorabbin Kangaroos. Ricky Barnes was on fire and kicked four. Michael Klomp kicked two and is now equal first in the third XXII goal kicking tally. Todd Anderson assisted with two goals. Chris Dore and the Veteran, Mr. Aaron Jobe kicked one goal each. South Yarra had the lead at quarter time, 3-2-20 vs 1-1-7; But then two guns from Moorabbin showed up and the lead changed hands, 6-5-41 to 8-1-49; at half time. In the third quarter, the Kanagroos put the accelerator on and kicked away 8-7-55 to 11-5-71. Ricky Barnes had a “blinder” (we won’t mention the crucial 50m penalty he gave away). Ricky Barnes is now third on the SYFC thirds goal kicking list with four goals from four matches. Todd Anderson, Michael Klomp, Jarryd Mills, Chris Dore and Ryan McDonald all played well. However, the deficit didn’t change at the final siren and Moorrabbin walked away winners by 16 points. The final score; 10-11-71 to 13-9-87. Next week the Yarras play away at Jack Barker Oval against Cheltenham. Cheltenham is coming off a big 102 point win against Dingley. Cheltenham is sixth on the ladder and is desperate for the win to put them back into finals contention. The reserves played winless Caulfield, at Koornang Park Reserve. SYFC started the day well and were leading at quarter time; 1-1-7 to 3-5-23. In the second quarter, the Bears fought back, and got themselves to a 4 point deficit at half time. SYFC owned the premiership quarter and extended the difference to 16 points. The final quarter was tight, but SYFC walked away victorious by 23 points. After a week in the seniors Peter Quinn put on his goal kicking boots and kicked a lazy four goals. Peter is the leading goal kicker in the reserves for SYFC and sits 19th in the league’s tally. Todd Davy was exciting and kicked two. Coach Lachlan Clohesy was scathing in last week’s press conference about Andrew Callendar’s goal kicking ability, but this week Andrew turned it around and kicked two. Shane Tyssen dominated and contributed with one goal. At the end of the game, Shane thanked his team mates and noted that it was a “team effort” and exerted his man love for his fellow team mates. The smiling assassin, Josh Wingrove kicked one. The man with long blonde curly locks, Mitchell Ross kicked one. Ryan Dore kicked one and he assures me that it was goal of the century. After the game, Coach Lachlan Clohesy phrased the efforts of Shane Tyssen, David Alberti, Peter Quinn, Josh Wingrove, Todd Davey and Andrew Callendar. The final score; 9-7-61 to 12-12-84. Next week SYFC reserves play second placed Skye. Last time they met was round two when Skye walked away victors by 131 points. The seniors played a troubled Caulfield Bears away at Koornang Park Reserve. Caulfield had only won two games throughout the year, including one against SYFC in round one. The Yarras were slow to start and at the first change, the score was 4-2-26 vs 3-1-19. But in the second quarter the bears ran away, adding four goals to SYFC’s none. At half time the score was 7-6-48 to 3-3-21. The reliable Tom Hanney, Josh Gledhill and Jared Pollard all played well. Matthew Jewell went about his business, as if it were at the fruit markets and snapped a banana (on his right boot) for a goal. The baby faced, Daniel Russell “clunked” one up forward. He then went back and kicked it through the big sticks. Chris Wood used his bright orange boots to kick a goal. Ryan Lapish was very good around the flanks and he kicked one. Josh Gledhill showed leadership at its best when he baulked around several players and kicked a goal from at least 60 metres (no exaggeration). The golden fist of Tommy Rogers was well used in defence. Cory Brady played very well, and detectives are still trying to figure out why he wasn’t in the best. He kicked one goal and his extreme pace was well used in the midfield. During the start of the third quarter, the Yarras were on fire. All players were contributing and the win was in sight. Down by 17 points, Cory Brady had a set shot on goal 5 metres behind the forward arc and kicked it through at goal height. This caused for a huge celebration, one similar to the scenes on the streets after World War 2. The skipper did a double fist pump and screamed, “F*ck Yeah! Come on boys!” To which the umpire (believed to be a parking inspector by trade, destroys Christmas for orphans across the world and is named Gargamel (re: smurfs)) obscurely paid a free kick. It was so unusual that many watching or participating in the game had no idea what it was for, including Matthew Jewell. Matthew politely queried the absurd decision with the umpire which consequently cost a fifty metre penalty. The result was that the goal was overturned and the bears kicked a behind. After that, the Bears kicked away. The final break the scores were, 10-10-70 to 6-4-40 and then increased at the final siren to 15-16-106 to 7-7-49. Next week the seniors will be playing in front of the SYFC past players at the den against sixth placed Skye. Skye are chasing their third win in a row. The bombers have won five games this year, including SYFC in round two by 101 points.
