Ruby is in a New York State of Mind Let’s get something out - TopicsExpress

Ruby is in a New York State of Mind Let’s get something out right up front and talk about the elephant in the blog. After weeks of planning, Auntie Ruby was bumped from the “Today” show at the last minute. I was in my New York hotel room getting all dolled up for an exotic dinner at a celebrity chefs restaurant when I received the cancellation call. Oh my, that was a sudden letdown. My ego was fine. I’m way past the point in life where I take things personally. However, I felt bad for the team that is helping me find my way in the United States. Our little group of creative collaborators and production people have been working so hard on the Mrs. Ruby Tips website and videos. I wanted this for them. My fantastic friends at “Parade Magazine” spread the word to millions of people with a full-page ad last Sunday. Ethel even asked Billy to read the instructions for my VCR so we could tape my network TV debut. Billy lost his reading glasses last week, and the poor chap’s eyes are dreadful. Asking him to read the fine print in that manual was like asking Mr. Magoo to fly an airliner. It took a while to get there, and we had a lot of blinking lights on the control panel, but he eventually got the job done. With all those people showing support for an old gal trying to give it a go, it’s clear that I’m blessed beyond my wildest expectations. Which is why I didn’t dwell on this little setback. We all face challenges in life. Whether it is a health issue, a missed promotion at work, relationship problems, or resenting your parents for some real or perceived defect – everyone has something they have to deal with. The first thing I always do is try to forgive – which doesnt mean forget, by the way. The health benefits of forgiveness allow me to minimize the negative effects of tension, anger, depression, and fatigue. Apologies can help disarm the thoughts of hurtfulness. After getting past the initial disappointment over being bumped, I couldn’t let myself be sad. Quite the contrary, this trip was a success in so many ways. Just think about it, my little muffins, Ruby was invited to appear on a famous morning TV show. That alone is a huge accomplishment! I visited the Big Apple for the first time in my life. Me – a simple girl from Liverpool – there I was in the world’s greatest city. I got to see the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty in person. There was a carriage ride through Central Park. I strolled down Broadway and through Times Square. Those are things most people see in motion pictures and on television. Ruby got to experience them in real life. It would be a dream come true for many folks. And it came true for me. A cab driver noticed my accent and asked what part of England I’m from. When I told him I am from Liverpool, we had a nice chat about the Beatles. He not only knew about their legendary concert at New York’s Shea Stadium – but he actually attended the show! I was invited to a swanky party at a posh restaurant where I rubbed shoulders with some TV personalities and kept hearing the same story: We get bumped all the time. That’s showbiz! Turns out it happens to everyone. With extra time on our hands, the crew and I spent a day gallivanting around Manhattan. Some locals showed me the proper way to eat a “slice of pie” (pizza). I devoured a slice of glorious cheesecake. I even asked people on the street if they could point me toward the deli where they filmed the famous scene in “When Harry Met Sally.” We captured it all on video, and we look forward to sharing those segments in the coming weeks. Thanks so much to Team Ruby for sticking with me through all this: Mike, Blair, Paula, Erica, Tony, John 1 and John 2, Anthony, Sarah, Social Fly, and our newest member, Lucy. Auntie Ruby also wants to thank all the readers and viewers for your kind messages and belief in this 68-year-old bird. We couldn’t do this without your love and support. Stay tuned – there are more good times to come! With an open heart. Love you. Ruby XOXO
