#Russia: Watch SU-33 fighters showcase their skills over Arctic waters Naval pilots of Russia’s Northern Fleet successfully executed training exercises flying the SU-33 aboard the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft-cruiser in the Barents Sea. Wednesday. The exercises are part of the maritime phase of the fighter pilots’ training which is set to continue for several more weeks. The flight practice of the Su-33 pilots is particularly challenging as it involves taking off and landing from the deck while the cruiser moves through Arctic waters in sometimes rough conditions. On take-off pilots have to reach between 180 to 220 kph (111 mph- 136 mph) from standing to remain airborne after leaving the ramp at the end of the deck. On the return flight they must hit between 235 and 250 kph (146 mph-155 mph) to make a controlled landing. The fighter pilots of the Northern Fleet are some of the best trained on earth, and the only ones to operate so far north. The Admiral Kuznetsov is the flagship of the Russian navy and was the first to deploy Sukhoi SU-33.
