SEVERE WEATHER WARNING. ISSUED BY MetService AT 9:11 am 10-Jul-2014 Northeasterly gales and periods of rain continuing over northern New Zealand today and Friday. Heavy rain developing in the west and north of the South Island overnight Thursday. A strong northeasterly flow over northern New Zealand is expected to bring periods of rain to Northland today. For Northland, rain accumulations during today and through Friday may approach 100mm in some northern and eastern areas, particularly north of the Bay of Islands, and although this is technically below warning criteria the rain is likely to fall on already sodden areas and may lead to further surface flooding and slips as well as causing already swollen rivers to rise further. Steady northeasterly gales over Northland and Auckland are also expected to continue today and during Friday, with gusts of 90 to 110km/hr still likely in exposed places, which again although strictly below warning criteria is still likely to cause problems for some people in these areas. As the trough approaches the country later on Friday, the northeast winds over Northland could become stronger and reach severe gale in exposed places. For these reasons the warnings for rain in Northland and strong winds in Northland and Auckland will be maintained. People are advised that heavy rain can cause surface flooding and slips as well as causing rivers to rise, while strong winds have the potential to damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures and make driving conditions hazardous. HEAVY RAIN WARNING AREA/S AFFECTED Northern and eastern parts of Northland *basically... sucky weather guys... keep safe!! xoxox
