SHOFAR 📖 DEVOTION 26/12/2014. #PROXIMITY NOT ACCESS. A time came when Lots servants and Abrahams servants strived. Consequently, Abraham generously told Lot to choose any place and Abraham would be happy to dwell any where. But it was Lot to choose first. Lot then chose Sodom which is translated as burning. This means that Sodom was already predestined to burn even though it was beautiful in sight. On the contrary, Abraham settled in Mamre which means fatness or strength. What a sharp contrast! One would really wonder why a man who walked with Abraham that long would choose the only place he should not have chosen, a place which according to the judgements of God was burning. Shortly after, Sodom is at war and Abraham fights with them. He is given gifts from the war which we can say he rightly deserved but he refused them. He knew he could not receive from Bera the king of Sodom whose name is translated as Son of evil. See, Abraham refused even the gifts from the king of Sodom. While Lot was comfortable to live in his territory. Lot must have been very close to Abraham but he must have lacked a sight Abraham had, a sight that is with men who God speaks to. This is when we realised that even when we were close to men of God, they might be our relatives or even spouses but we still had the responsibility of cultivating a relationship with God so we hear him for ourselves because this was the stability of our times. We realised that we still had the responsibility of praying for our lives our selves. They might direct us but our lives are our responsibility.
