SOAPBOX MOMENT: Not every winner, wins the crown! Every single young woman I work with starts at a different point. ---- Some young women have had the luxury of a very supportive family and community, while others have not. ---- Some have the finances to have their entire wardrobe custom made, and it fits like a glove...while others may have moms who design and create to the best of their ability. ---- Some have extremely outgoing peacock personalities -- never meet a stranger and can schmooze like crazy (and I think that is a skill set by the way). While others are more task driven personalities -- the ones that would make OUTSTANDING queens, but they have difficulty actually winning a pageant in 2-3 days --- because its human nature for judges to be easily drawn to the peacock personalities and they may miss a more subdued talent! ---- Some have high self-esteem and a ton of confidence...while others have very little. My point is --- if you have a personality where competing, speaking and networking come very natural to you -- and you win -- that may not have required as much work and may have come very easy for you. But if you start with a low self-esteem, or having to earn every dime yourself to pay for your clothes, or you dont naturally have a peacock personality -- you MAY have more hurdles to jump on your journey to the winners circle. NEVER, EVER beat yourself up if you improve in any area on that journey. Yes...winning a pageant is fabulous -- but winning your confidence, learning how to be competitive in a VERY competitive world, holding your own, and taking pride in your accomplishments will take you just as far in life. In the scriptures we learn about the poor widow offering: And He sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent. Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury;… When you start with less -- and you do the best you can do with where you are at that moment -- thats like the poor widow donating two small copper coins. What you get out of pageant competition is in direct proportion to where you start. If I coach a young woman, and she never actually wins a pageant, BUT she walks away a different person --- more confident, more put together, able to handle tough criticism (which the world WILL give you -- you better be ready for it), a better speaker, and able to carry herself with pride --- thats a winner in my book.
